Ooo-er Missus! Voyeuristic fun from a bygone era…..like you might have once seen for a tanner at the end of the Brighton Pier.

For those of you who don't know what we are going on about a Mutoscope is a coin operated, hand cranked, animated picture machine which works on the same principal as a child’s flip book, they could have been about anything, from historic buildings to scenic views. Quite often they were found in amusement arcades or at the end of a sea side piers, showing a mix of different reels, including ‘girlie’ reels that ranged from the risqué to soft porn, although the quality was often blurred and the whole picture show lasting no longer than a minute or so, Often they were named with suggestive titles - one reel was called "What the Butler Saw", which became the common name for these machines in the UK. After decimalisation in the 70’s the majority of these machines were decommissioned as they were too expensive to convert.

In the 1940’s you could also buy Mutoscope cards from "coin-in-the-slot" machines although they were not related to cards from the mutoscope machines, they were however, pictures of similar style, mainly of pin-up girls dressed in proactively placed clothing or wearing lingerie.
